The interview published by WineNews was the last that Antonio Galloni renowned Italian editor for the famous magazine "The Wine Advocate" gave. A few hours ago the critic announced that he had left his position to start a new venture on the web, at www.antoniogalloni.com. "It is a multi-media and technological platform - the site reads - on which Galloni will continue to publish his reports on the wines of Italy, Champagne, Burgundy and California (as he did for "The Wine Advocate", ed.), but also expand coverage to other regions.
“My interactions with readers over the past ten years in which I have been writing about wine”, Galloni said in a statement, “are a constant source of inspiration to me. This experience has allowed me to introduce several innovations at "The Wine Advocate", including video coverage of public tastings and events. At the same time, I felt a strong desire to return to my entrepreneurial roots, of the Piedmont Report days in 2004. I will continue to work to give my readers greater accessibility to and knowledge of wine. The new venture www.antonigalloni.com will let me serve my readers better than before, the goal being first and foremost to help them make informed choices when choosing wine and introducing them to great but still unknown wines. My priority now is to build a team of top level professionals to develop this project, while at the same time being fully aware that world-class talents are rare and hard to find”.
This leads us to think that Galloni’s decision was influenced we called the "Robert Parker Revolution" that began with opening to ads in the magazine (though not of wineries and wines) and culminated with the sale of the magazine to a group of Asian investors, which will move its head office to Singapore.
We would also like to ask (and we will ask him as soon as possible) what the real reasons are for his choice, and if the tasting of Brunello di Montalcino 2008 and 2007 Reserve, summarized in an unflattering opinion, was Galloni’s last for "The Wine Advocate", or the first for his new business. "www.antoniogalloni.com represents the values and standards that I have imposed on myself during my entire career,” added Galloni, “that is, true independence and firmly believing in the importance of representing the interests of my readers.
Our readers will have full access to over 25.000 reviews and hundreds of articles I have written over the past ten years. I want to thank my long-time readers, many of which date back to the days of Piedmont Report, for their unwavering support, and also to Robert Parker for encouraging me to follow my passion for wine”.
