“A reflection on the commercial validity of screw-off or synthetic tops is, today, prohibited for protected denominations of origin with vast production levels, as well as the adoption of alternative containers, like 3 liter [and larger] boxes, but which would open up new markets for ‘Made in Italy’ wines, starting with the Scandinavian countries”. This request to consider the alternatives to the traditional corkwood-glass bottle packing methods for Italy’s denomination wines was made recently by Italian Wine Union (UIV) president, Andrea Sartori, during a meeting with Italian Minister of Agriculture, Paolo De Castro.
“We don’t want to put Brunello in plastic” – emphasized Sartori – “but soliciting a shared reflection among institutions and productive realities on the barriers that are present for those who produce millions of bottles of wine, like Soave, Valpolicella and Chianti DOCG, could help create new marketing tools”.
