The maximum is ten glasses a week, no more than two a day for both women and men (current recommendations say not to exceed two glasses for women and three for men) and some days of zero alcohol consumption during the week. These are the new recommendations on alcohol consumption defined by independent experts for the French National Agency Santé Publique France and the National Institut du Cancer, Inca.
This is just advice, not official recommendations, but in the face of the evolution of consumer guidelines, Vin et Société, on behalf of the 500.000 vineyard and wine "players" it represents, as it points out on the Vitisphere portal, has taken note of the change and renewed its proposal to the Government to contribute to spreading the guidelines, thus demonstrating the sector is staying up to date with the times. The more critical issue, instead is the expert's suggestion to replace the warning "L’abus d’alcool est dangereux sur la santé" (alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health) with "Toute consommation d'alcohol comporte des risques pour votre santé" (consuming alcohol can be dangerous for your health), because alcohol consumption is considered to be harmful starting from the very first glass and the contrasting policy of dangerous behavior is directed towards moderate consumption.
French experts also point their fingers to the contradiction that, on the one hand, the public emphasizes the need to reduce alcohol consumption, while on the other, considering its significant economic weight (22 billion euros in turnover for the sector of alcoholic beverages), promoting it as the cultural heritage of the country. Requests for these changes are also accompanied by a revision of the taxation system proportional to the amount of alcohol (currently fixed on the basis of the type of drink: 0.003 euros per glass of wine to 0.14 euro for spirits), advertising on the web, and calorie information on the label. Vin et Société says the effectiveness of these are measures is yet to be confirmed.
