VINEXPO: ITALIAN PRODUCERS ARE TICKLED PINK. NEW MARKETS CHINA, INDIA, BRAZIL AND RUSSIA, AND HISTORIC MARKETS EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES ARE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT ITALIAN WINES MAINLY BECAUSE OF LOCAL TRADITIONS AND GREAT QUALITY / PRICE RATIO

What does the market say about Italian wine? WineNews talks to wine producers at Vinexpo in Bordeaux where the great worldwide interest in Italian wines is confirmed.
There were lots of smiles and good feelings for Italian wine at the Bordeaux Vinexpo. From established markets like the U.S.A., to new ones, such as China, India, Brazil and Russia, the great variety of typical wines and territories and the leadership in price / quality ratio seem to be the winning cards, as the many Italian wine producers at the French Fair confirmed to www.winenews.tv.
Italian wine is doing very well at the Bordeaux show. There is a large number of Asian participants and a big interest in our Doc wines,” explains Angela Velenosi, head of the famous wine of the Marche region. “We are happy, there is a great turnout from Asia, especially India and China, and a confirmation from Europe, Canada and the United States. There is enthusiasm”, echoes Nadia Zenato from Venice. Marilisa Allegrini of the famous brand Valpolicella is also positive: “Wine is having a great revival after the 2009 crisis, there is great attention to quality, great interest from Asia and South America”. This enthusiasm has an even higher value “due to the high level of professionalism of the public,” says Michele Bernetti of the Umani Ronchi winery, one of the leading brands of wine in the Marche region, “and for us it is important to be there, because there are many importers from more remote countries”. “It confirms the growing optimism that we have been feeling for more than a year. We must pay careful attention to Asia, the future is there,” says Sergio Zingarelli, President of Rocca delle Macie in Chianti.
Davide Mascalzoni, General Manager of the Italian Wine Group also confirmed the same sentiment: “There is great excitement, especially from traditional markets like the U.S.A. and Canada, and great possibilities are opening up in emerging countries such as Russia and China”. Markets where quality and tradition win, said Pio Boffa of the historic Pio Cesare winery in Piedmont: “The Asian markets are discovering our uniqueness that sets us apart from the standardization of other areas in the world” Another arrow to the bow of Italian wine is the price / quality ratio, “mid-range Italian wines are doing better,” says Lodovico Antinori, head of the Biserno Estate, “and are having great success all over the world”.
