AN UNFAIR EXCHANGE: 4 KILOS OF PEACHES WORTH ONE ESPRESSO ACCORDING TO CONFAGRICOLTURA

“Economic costs have increased and again this year we are forced to harvest below production costs”. This is the alarm that has been launched by Confagricoltura in reference to the crisis that has hit the Italian peach and nectarine industry yet again. Four kilos of fruit sold by a producer are worth the same amount as an espresso. Confagricoltura points out that even excellent production, like that of this year, is no longer worth producing: one kilo of fruit is worth only 27 cents.
Confagricoltura notes that there is no measure that the Italian government is prescribing to resolve this problem and asks that an intervention be made by institutions to somehow attenuate the effects of increased production costs and a decrease in sales. One option proposed has been to create aisles in supermarkets that are dedicated solely to Italian food products.
