A Council on Information about Wine was held recently in Brussels. It was sponsored by the European Winemakers and is committed to stimulating moderate and responsible drinking of alcoholic beverages in Europe. The main commitment of the council, set up at the EU Forum “Alcohol and Health”, will be to spread authorized scientific information on the health, cultural, and social aspects of wine consumption, through an on-line database (www.wineinformationcouncil.eu).
Another goal will be to promote the best guidelines for responsible drinking and reduce harmful uses of alcohol, under the EU program ”Wine in Moderation, Art de Vivre” (www.wineinmoderation.eu). Lamberto Gancia, President of the European Committee of Winemakers (CEEV) stated we are proud that, “the program has mobilized a significant number of leading national and European organizations, in an extremely fragmented wine industry”. Palma Esposito, Vice President of the “ Wine work group” of the Copa-Cogeca (The European Organization of Winemaking Farms and Companies) added “we are convinced that the best way to appreciate wine is to drink it in moderation and we are very satisfied that our common campaign has today begun its next important phase”.
