G8 AGRICULTURE - A 13 POINT DOCUMENT FOR THE FUTURE OF THE INDUSTRY. AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SECURITY TOP THE INTERNATIONAL AGENDA

Agriculture and food security are the central topics of the International agenda: increasing both public and private investments; sustainable agriculture; rural development and environmental protection in cooperation with International organizations and addressing the problems of climate change and global population growth. It is a different synergy at the International level, supporting emerging countries but also sharing knowledge and technologies, and new and clearer rules for the International agricultural market.

The most important goal of “Agriculture and food security topping the International agenda” is the final document (listed in full in the following article) of the first G8 Ministers meeting for Agriculture, in Valmarino Cison (Treviso). Among the guidelines of the document, set in 13 points, besides the inevitable commitment of solving the problem of world hunger, it also speaks about strengthening and coordinating “the National and International forecasts and management of agricultural statistics and pre-alert mechanisms to anticipate and avoid future crises”.

The ministers also highlighted the need to “support the beneficial effects of globalization and opening to markets, underlining the importance of a system of International trade for agricultural products, based on specific rules. We are committed to reaching a comprehensive, ambitious and balanced conclusion of the Doha Round”. Many important commitments were made and signed by the Ministers of the 8 most industrialized countries of the world. However, as the Reuters agency reported and the Italian Minister Luca Zaia explained at the opening of the meeting (“we are certainly not going to talk about economic measures today”), no financial aid package in support of agriculture was set up.
