HE CHANGED THE COURSE OF ITALIAN WINE: TACHIS, WINEMAKER AND MAN OF GREAT VISION, HE DE-PROVINCIALIZED WINEMAKING AND LAUNCHED ITALY TO WORLD WIDE SUCCESS... THE SOMMELIERS ARE GIVING A “PARTY” IN HIS HONOR ON MAY 14 IN ROME

Giacomo Tachis is part of that small group of men who changed the course of Italian wine and is rightfully considered one of the main architects of the “renaissance” of wine in Italy. His name is on some of the most important Italian wine labels.
After many years, his choices are still among the most valuable contributions to the success of Italian wines in the world. He introduced methods, now “coded”: clone selection, high-density planting, low yields, malolactic fermentation and aging in small oak. These techniques make it possible for the Italian winemaking tradition to converse with the French one, just like Tachis conversed with Emile Peynaud, who the Piedmont winemaker considers his main mentor. Tachis came to the Antinori Winery in 1961 where he remained for 32 years and created great wines such as Tignanello and Solaia. He was also the forerunner of the “Italian style winemaker”.
A few of his most important wineries are San Guido Estate, San Leonardo Estate, Argiolas, and Umani Ronchi. He is first and foremost a winemaker, but also a strategy consultant, capable of de-provincializing the entire sector and undertaking tasks such as upgrading Sicilian wines, starting with Nero d’Avola and Sardinian wines, starting with Carignano.
“Bibenda Day” celebrates one of the founding fathers of Italian winemaking, Giacomo Tachis, protagonist of the Italian wine renaissance: in Rome, May 14th. The Sommeliers are putting the “children” of the techniques created by the “maestro” on stage.
The event is a must for all wine and culture lovers, who will taste 24 “sacred” Italian wines that are all “children” of the great master born in Piedmont and adopted by Tuscany. There will be the wines of San Guido Estate (Sassicaia and Guidalberto); the famous Antinori wines (Solaia and Tignanello); Gaja (Barbaresco); Donnafugata (Mille e una Notte [Thousand and One Nights] and Tancredi); Argiolas (Turriga); Pelago (Umani Ronchi); Castello dei Rampolla (Sammarco and d’Alceo); Duca di Salaparuta (Duca Enrico) and many other wineries, all headed at one time or another by Giacomo Tachis. The Italian Sommelier Association and important journalists such as Daniele Cernilli, Armando Castagno, Paolo Lauciani, Daniela Scrobogna, Massimo Billetto and Daniele Maestri will be “conducting the orchestra” and will in turn tell about the Made in Italy excellences.
More than an event, it is the realization of a dream: to celebrate in one great moment quality wine, its creators and the living symbol who made the revival of Italian winemaking possible.
