“PIZZA IS FOOD EXCELLENCE MADE IN ITALY AND TELLS THE STORY OF HOW A CULINARY TRADITION BECAME SYNONYMOUS WITH ITALIAN STYLE”. ALFONSO PECORARO SCANIO RELAUNCHES THE PETITION TO PUT NEAPOLITAN PIZZA ON THE UNESCO LIST

“Pizza is a Made in Italy culinary excellence and it also tells the story of how a culinary tradition has become synonymous with being Italian, helping to spread the image of Italy in the world. It would be of capital importance that the National Commission for UNESCO approved the application on the eve of Milan Expo, which is dedicated to agriculture”.
These are the words od Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio at the international initiative in support of the petition asking that the art of Neapolitan pizza making be put on the "Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage". The president of the "UniVerde" Foundation (www.fondazioneuniverde.it), will re launch the petition to continue the procedure, as it has been waiting to be examined since 2011, and have it nominated on the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee.
The petition was presented on November 14th at "Rossopomodoro" in Covent Garden. Pecoraro Scanio participated in the event in partnership with Coldiretti, Association Pizzaiuoli Napolitani and Change.org, and also Franco Manna, President of "Rossopomodoro” and Leonardo Simonelli, President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in London.
“The petition is addressed to all those who enjoy the most famous and well known specialty on the planet - the symbol of Italy and Italian culture in the world. It is therefore necessary to defend the Italian origin of this art”, said the President of UniVerde, “the quality of the ingredients and the economy linked to the solid tradition of expert hands of Neapolitan pizza makers. The recognition of the art of pizza as a World Heritage site by UNESCO is a unique opportunity to defend Made in Italy products from the proliferation of counterfeit food”.
