ROMANÉE CONTI IS THE PROTAGONIST AT THE GELARDINI & ROMANI WINE AUCTION IN ROME: 9,786 EUROS FOR A 2005 VINTAGE AND 1,916 FOR A MONTRACHET 1994. TOP BIDS FOR OTHER CULT NAMES LIKE CRISTAL ROEDERER, KRUG, AND DOM PERIGNON

The king of the Gelardini & Romani Wine Auction (www.grwineauction.com) held recently in Rome was definitely Romanée Conti. A top bid of 9,786 euros was made for a 2005 bottle, as well as an impressive bid of 1,916 euros for the company’s only white wine, a Montrachet from 1994. Thanks to a packed crowd of buyers, both Italian and international, over 80% of the lots in the catalogue were acquired, with an average increase of 60% above the asking bid. This is an exceptional result when considering the fact that this was the first Italian auction constru
cted prevalently around white wines. Among the 200 lots available at the auction, most were dedicated to French wines, with a special place of honor for Champagne: a magnum of Cristal Roederer Rosè 1989 went for a bid of 1,797 euros, a magnum of Dom Perignon Rosè 1995 was sold for 898.50 euros, while a bottle of Krug Clos du Mesnil 1996 went for 838.60 euros.
Among the whites from Burgundy, the lots that reaped the highest bids were: 3 bottles of Montrachet 2002 Domaine Leflaive that were sold for 6,589 euros, 6 bottles Corton Charlemagne 2004 Coche Dury for 5,990 euros, 3 bottles of Montrachet 2003 Domaine Leflaive for 5,271.20 euros, 3 bottles of Corton Charlemagne 1997 Coche Dury 4,312.80 euros, 3 bottles of Corton Charlemagne 1995 Coche Dury for 3,354.40 euros and, finally, 3 bottles Corton Charlemagne 2002 Coche Dury were sold for 2,396 euros.
Other bubblies followed as top sellers: 3 magnums of Krug 1996 were sold for 2.396 euros, 2 bottles of Cristal Roederer Rosè 1996 for 1,317.80 euros, 6 bottles of Dom Perignon 1975 for 1,078.20 euros, 6 bottles of Dom Perignon 1982 for 958.40 euros, 3 bottles of Dom Perignon 1966 for 910.48 euros, 3 bottles of Dom Perignon 1964 at 838.60 euros, 3 bottles of Dom Perignon 1996 for 599 euros, and 3 bottles of Cristal Roedere 1985 that went for 599 euros.
As for Italian whites, there was also an increased interest at this auction: 6 bottles of Soave La Rocca Pieropan 2004 were sold for 167.72 euros, 12 bottles of Oslavje Radikon 1997 for 155.74 euros, 3 bottles of Breg Anfora Gravner 2001 for 143.76 euros, 3 bottles of Cervaro della Sala Antinori del 2000 for 143.76 euros.
The next Gelardini & Romani Wine Auction won’t be until after the summer holidays but given the current trends, it will surely include another catalogue of the highest quality wines…
