THE FOOD INDUSTRY IS HOLDING ITS OWN: 83% OF CORPORATIONS CLOSED 2009 AT A PROFIT, ACCORDING TO THE ESG89 GROUP SURVEY

The food sector has held up well against the economic shocks in 2009: 83% of corporations closed the year at a profit and 14% have realized a positive growth trend on operating results. These are the results of the ESG89 Research Center annual analysis, conducted at the exit of the long-awaited 2009 budget, on various sectors that characterize the economic backbone of Italy. This time one of the production sectors in which Italians are masters takes the lead: the food industry.

The study was conducted starting from financial information relating to a composite sample of the top 550 corporations in the industry, operating in Italy, which is historically a territory devoted to the cultivation of high quality products.
The performance of the portfolio shows that the food industry is doing well considering that 56% of the operators, in 2009, increased turnover and the percentage continues to increase for profits.

The Research Center ESG89 conducted this investigation to verify, in detail, economic consequences in the various sectors.

The results of the data clearly indicate that the food industry was one of the few to have been only slightly touched by the long recession and it has managed to keep business almost stable compared to previous years. The average values are lower only when compared to the years before the onset of the economic crisis.
