100% of the lots sold for 7 million dollars at Acker Merrell & Condit's "Legendary Cellar of Wolfgang Grunewald" auction, which brought one of the most prestigious private collections in the United States under the hammer. And, 35% of the unique lots reached a new record. In all, the auction has broken price records 245 times.
The cornerstone of the collection, as often is the case, was Domaine de la Romanée Conti, which topped records for 68 different bottles: 22 by La Tache of vintages between 1937 and 2008; 15 by Romanée Conti, vintages between 1961 and 2011; 7 from Richebourg, 1943 to 1999; 10 from Grands Echezeaux and Echezeaux (1962-2006) and 11 from Montrachet (1982 to 2008).
In the top ten, the number one and two lots were two magnums of Romanée Conti 1999, sold for 92.625 Dollars, and Romanée Conti 2005, for 86.450 Dollars. Then three magnums of Romanée Conti 2001 (80.275 Dollars), a Romanée Conti Jeroboam (67.925 Dollars), 6 bottles of Romanée Conti 2006 (67.925 Dollars), three bottles of Romanée Conti 1999 (55.575 Dollars), three magnum by La Tache 2005 (49.400 Dollars), and lot of 4 bottles of Romanée Conti 2000 and 4 of 2001 (49.400), three bottles of Romanée Conti 2005 (46.930) and three special magnum of Henri Japer Vosne Romanée Cros Parantoux 1996, for 80.275 Dollars. Another brand that had never seen such high bids, Champagne Krug, broke records with 25 different lots starting with a rare 1929 vintage bottle, purchased by an American collector for 37.050 Dollars, but also reached record prices with vintages 1947, 1952, 1959, 1961, 1962, 1966, 1971, 1973, 1976 and 1979, as well as Krug Clos du Mesnil with its first vintage in 1979, and magnums of the 1985, 1988 and 1990 vintages.
Bordeaux also did quite well with some of the greatest bottles from the last century that commanded exceptional prices.
There were 34 new records, including Petrus 1961 Magnum of Mouton Rothschild 1959, but also much older bottles such as Ausone's 1926, Montrose's 1928, and particularly rare bottles, from the magnums L'Evangile 1961 to Lafleur 1975, to Le Pin's 1982. The bottles stored in the cellars of Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion did very well also, but the real surprise was the Burgundy whites.
“Wine has been such an important and exciting part of my life, both as a collector and as a wine lover, that the response to this auction has really and profoundly moved me”, commented Wolfgang Grunewald, who, at 87, decided to sell its incredible collection.
“We tasted over 100 wines from the Wolfgang collection all week”, said John Kapon, President of Acker Merrall, “and I did not taste one bad, surprising bottle. I'm sure the new owners of these wines will appreciate every drop. Wolfgang Grunewald is not only one of the greatest collectors in the world, he is also one of the greatest gentlemen I know. I cannot thank him enough for choosing Acker Merrall”.
