The historic Frescobaldi family has definitively put roots in the Chianti Classic area. As WineNews anticipated, the group led by Lamberto Frescobaldi bought, at an auction, outdoing important competitors, the vineyards of the Castello di San Donato in Perano, in Gaiole in Chianti, bordering Radda, in one of the most prestigious subdivisions of the entire Black Rooster area.
There are 52 hectares of Chianti Classico vines of the total 250, which Frescobaldi had already mostly rented in 2014 (https://goo.gl/nC1hsk).
Renting the vineyards, as Lamberto Frescobaldi had explained to WineNews at the time, was preparatory to the definitive acquisition. “This was not a speculative operation. It is an important investment”, Frescobaldi had said then, “now we must reorganize the vineyards, and when we are satisfied with the work we have to do, then we will bottle it. For now we are renting and thinking about the vineyards, tomorrow we will see. It's a beautiful area with fantastic terroir and a great exposition”.
It is now the property of Frescobaldi in the Chianti Classico, in addition to the prestigious estates the group owns in Tuscany: Tenuta di Castiglioni, in the Florentine Chianti area; Nipozzano Castle and Pomino Castle, true "monopolies “ with the Frescobaldi denomination of origin, in Chianti Rufina; Castelgiocondo and Luce della Vita in Montalcino and Tenuta dell'Ammiraglia in Maremma. The historic family of Florentine vintners had not yet set foot in the Chianti Classico area. We must also remember that the Frescobaldis also own two of the most legendary wines in the world, Ornellaia and Masseto, in Bolgheri.
