NAS CONFISCATES 150 QUINTALS OF SANGIOVESE FROM PUGLIA THAT WERE DESTINED FOR WINERIES IN THE CHIANTI CLASSICO REGION. THE TRUCK LOAD WAS WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION DOCUMENTS AND POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE INTENDED FINAL USE OF GRAPES

A load of 150 quintals of Sangiovese grapes grown in Foggia and destined for a wine producing company in the Chianti Classico region was recently confiscated by Italian NAS police during a check in Castellina in Chianti (Siena). The load was initially confiscated because the truck had none of the required travel documentation accompanying the grapes.
The check was part of a larger control project by NAS and the municipality of Castellina in Chianti that has been underway for a few weeks, surveying wineries and transportation in the terroir of Chianti Classico production. Investigations are now being made into the intended destination of the use of the grape load.

Police have also uncovered numerous irregularities in grape loading and unloading registers of various wineries of the area.
