THE FIRST AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL WINE IS BORN; FRUIT OF THE VINE AND OF THE WORK OF THOSE WHO DEFEND HUMAN RIGHTS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. A SOPHISTICATED TESTIMONY FOR AN IMPORTANT CAMPAIGN: THE RIGHT TO FOOD AND TO A HEALTHY AND SUFFICIENT DIET

The first Amnesty International wine is born: fruit of the vine and of
the work of those who defend human rights throughout the world. With this
initiative, the association founded by the English attorney Peter Benenson,
who has been defending human rights in the world since 1961, sanctioned
by the universal Declaration of human rights of 1948 and by successive
acts signed by the international community, strengthens an alliance with
anyone who shares the values that have always inspired his actions: the
respect for human beings and for the environment.
The Roero 2004 is an excellent wine. It is obtained from the Nebbiolo
grapes and has a intense ruby red colour with the unmistakable fragrances of
fruit (raspberry and blackberry) and flowers (violet and wild rose), and with
a subtle hint of wood that gives balsamic notes to the delicate taste.
The grape harvest takes place from October 10-20. The wine is aged for a
year in wooden barrels that have a 30-hectolitre capacity. Advised serving
temperature is 18° C.
What is it that unites these two worlds, apparently so different from
each other? What they have in common is the idea that is fundamental to an
association that defends human rights, and an agricultural product of
high quality and tradition: the right to a healthy and adequate diet and,
most of all, respect for human beings and for the environment. With this
initiative, Amnesty International symbolically strengthens an alliance with anyone
who shares their values.
The first Amnesty wine was produced purposely for Amnesty International
(information: Amnesty International, tel. 011/8170530, ai.torino@amnesty.it, www.amnesty.piemontevda.it) by Canale d'Alba’s small wine-making estate, the
Porello Vini. It has already been recognized by Gambero Rosso and by
Slow Food in the "Guide to Italian Wines" with a ranking of "Three Glasses",
the highest possible acknowledgment.
The Roero is a homogeneous territory that is located between the Tanaro
River to the south, the Asti and Turin provinces to the southeast and
north, and the state route 61 to the west. Its hills constitute the last
western offshoots of the Asti hills that stretch following to the left of the
Tanaro River. The territory presents homogeneous geo-morphological
characteristics and a cultural identity derived from strong times of aggregation and
historic unity. The Langhe and the Roero hills have always provided an
ideal habitat for grape vines. The chemical composition, the wealth of
mineral salts, physical structure of these lands in perfect harmony with a
favourable climatic situation, create the right environment for the
production of grapes and wines of the highest quality, such as the
Arneis, the Moscato, the Dolcetto, the Favorita and, of course, the Nebbiolo.

Portrait – What is Amnesty International
Amnesty International is a non-governmental association that, since
1961, defends human rights worldwide, sanctioned by the universal Declaration
of human rights of 1948 and by successive acts signed by the international
community. Amnesty International is not looking for "friends" in
governments, in economic or political lobbies, on in religious associations:
the only interests that it has always resolutely defended are those of
the victims. In war just as in peace, in democracies and dictatorships, in prisons
and in homes, Amnesty International actively supports whoever suffers violence
or deprivation of their fundamental human rights, at a physical or moral
level, by a widespread research activity, sensitisation, denouncement,
numerous thematic campaigns and an effective action for certain specific cases.
Today Amnesty International has close to two million members, advocates
and donors, in more than 140 countries. The Italian division was
established in 1975, and is made up of more than 80.000 members. Amnesty
International’s impartiality and the professional manner with which its researchers
have always worked have made for an authoritative voice for the media,
public opinion and institutions, up through the highest international levels.
It is a voice capable of creating outrage and concrete results.
In 1977 Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace prize.
Amnesty’s symbol, the small, shining candle inside a circle of barbed wire, is by
now universally recognized. But none of this is sufficient: there are still
many people who are not familiar with Amnesty’s mission.
Among the various initiatives intended to give visibility to the
association, and to its values most of all, there is one that deserves
special mention considering its strong symbolic significance: the first
Amnesty wine. It goes without saying that the right to food, and to a
healthy and adequate diet is one of Amnesty International’s pursued
objectives. In addition, with this initiative Amnesty confirms an
alliance with a manufacturer of Roero wines who shares a certain world vision
with the association: an idea of respect for human beings and for the
environment. The proceeds from the sales go to the work of Amnesty
International for the defence of human rights worldwide.
