In this dress, a woman will literally make the heads spin of those around her and, better yet, won’t bat an eyelash if someone accidentally spills a glass of wine on it. Because this dress is made from the bacteria found in fermenting wine, and the Australian researcher who invented it sustains that this creation could be the future of fashion.
To create the material, the slimy layer of cellulose that is formed on top of fermenting wine is extracted and wrapped around an inflatable doll. After it has taken the form of the model, the doll is then deflated. The material of this dress must be kept humid because the fibers are not long and flexible enough and if they do dry out they become fragile and break.
Gary Cass, the inventor of the outfit, explained to Reuters that, “It is an art form and is not meant to be worn every day. It was created as a provocative object, aimed at sparking a debate on the future of fashion”. Cass is a researcher at the University of Western Australia in Perth and had been inspired after working in a winery many years ago, but had only been able to realize his idea after obtaining financing from an art group to produce it.
